T-Mobile up on increased data use, texting and phone calls

February 28th, 2008, 1:48 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Sonya Smith

tmobilelogoT-Mobile’s customers made more phone calls, sent more messages and used more mobile services in 2007 than in any other year, according to the company’s release today of 2007 financial information.

We compared the company’s information on United States customer use in 2007 to prior years. Here are some interesting, but not really surprising results:

T-Mobile only included text messaging information in the financial reports for 2007, 2006 and 2005. That shows steady growth in the sending and receiving of text and multimedia messages. When tracking messages sent in the fourth quarters: 5.4 billion in 2005, 13 billion in 2006 and 24 billion sent in 2007.

Data revenue has also steadily increased. This category includes GPRS and EDGE access. A look at this category for the fourth quarters of available years: $279 million in 2005, $475 million in 2006 and $690 million in 2007.

But, while those first two findings show increased use of services on phones, customers are still steadily using more minutes per month. We tracked the average minutes used per month for each quarter between 2002 and 2007. The graph below shows the rising use of minutes by customers (click it to enlarge).
