ENTERTAINMENT
MY HIP — Makes web apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch right now and will be porting many of those to work natively on the devices. The company makes mostly games and entertainment software, but plans to develop some educational and social applications. (Atlanta, Georgia)
SIDE TRACK SOFTWARE — The company’s Josiah Larson said that he wants to develop his current iPhone web app iDoodle to run natively on the iPhone come June. “I’m intrigued by the iPhone platform and as a long time Mac developer my familiarity with the APIs should make for relatively easy development on that platform. I primarily plan on creating simple and fun graphics applications for the iPhone,” Larson said. (Pope Valley, Calif.)

GAMES
AMPLIFIED GAMES, INC. — The company started working last summer on fatfreegames.com for the iPhone and plans to develop a gaming community on the iPhone, according to President and CEO Tom Hubina. He said, “We’ll definitely be making native iPhone games, and plan to have between 2 and 5 ready when the App Store goes live in June. Most will be native versions of our existing Web games, but we’re also talking to some third parties about bringing their existing Web and mobile products over to the iPhone.” (Simi Valley, Calif.)

ELECTRONIC ARTS — The company’s demo iPhone game, SPORE, was shown during the Apple SDK presentation. Though the date has not been finalized, EA hopes to launch SPORE in September when it will also be released for the Mac, PC, DS and other mobile devices. The company also says that it has “other games in early stages of development.” Pricing has not yet been announced. (Redwood City, Calif.)

SEGA MOBILE — The company’s first native application for the iPhone is Super Monkey Ball for iPhone; as demonstrated during Apple’s iPhone SDK announcements. According to a spokeswoman: “Mobile presents an opportunity to re-introduce classic SEGA video game properties to a mainstream consumer audience. With a focus on casual, fun gameplay, Sega’s mobile games will span numerous genres. The unique features of the iPhone, such as the multi-touch touchscreen display and accelerometer, allow us to redefine our classic games and develop new interactive experiences.” (San Francisco, Calif.)

PRODUCTIVITY
Epocrates — The company was one of the five to display demo iPhone apps when the SDK was announced. Epocrates says its application will contain prescription information for people in the health care industry. The database of information will be “automatically populated with updated drug and safety information and important medical news.” Already, the company has a free Web-based drug regerence site at m.epocrates.com. Salesforce.com — The company’s mobile extension of its current software was debuted as the iPhone SDK was announced. A spokesperson said more details will be released closer to June.“The opportunity to use the innovative iPhone OS platform to deliver compelling Software-as-a-Service applications to mobile users is empowering to us, and ultimately, our customers,” said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of Salesforce.com. SOCIAL NETWORKING
AOL — Mobile is a big part of AOL’s overall product strategy and are continuing to extend products (such as AIM, Mail, Search, etc.) for popular mobile platforms. Access to AOL Mail has been available on the iPhone since its initial launch. Last week, AOL and Apple announced that AIM — the leading instant messaging service in the U.S. with more than 30 million active users — would soon be available on the iPhone. (Dulles, Virg.)

iRovr — Developing a native version of its current iPhone Web app, a social community called iRovr. Erik Madsen from the company says it is developing a native version because it will allow access to triangulated location data and direct access to the user’s file system. (Boulder, Co.)

Winksite — Company founder David Harper said Winksite’s service has already been optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch as a Web app and the company is already developing native applications. Harper said the company is “building an app that will add intelligence to your iPhone by injecting optical recognition of 2D codes (to enable physical hyperlinking) into its functionality. This will help stimulate an ecosystem connecting print to web, posters to video downloads, ads or flyers to iTune music sales, etc. ” (New York City, New York)

UTILITIES
Norbsoft Ltd. — The company has already developed the “iReading” Web application for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and will be developing native iPhone applications. Norbsoft President Tomasz Witt writes: “Our core business is developing usefull applications for mobile devices and we will continue doing this. There are a lot of mobile games developers, but not so many developers are specializing in making mobile usefull applications (especially for Java mobile phones). So our next products will be: mobile book for mobile phones (already prepared for iPhone), finance calculators and some RSS Readers.” (Warsaw, Poland)

Sun Microsystems — Developing Java Virtual Machine for the iPhone. Eric Klein, vice president of Java marketing, said in an interview that the JVM will be made available for free “as quickly as possible” after Apple releases the final version of the iPhone 2.0 software and SDK in June. Wildfire Internet — Developer of vFlashlight Web app for the iPhone that turns the phone’s screen into a sudo-flashlight. Wildfire’s President George Sykes said the company will be developing for the iPhone but he said that he cannot share their ideas “just yet, for obvious reasons.” (Granite City, Missouri)
